Happy Leap Day! February 29th should be a holiday. It’s only celebrated once every four years… that doesn’t seem like such a hassle.
To celebrate today, I’m going to be listing some of the songs that have been getting me through 2024 so far. This will be a mix of some old and some new, but overall a great vibe.
Side note: I am geeking out and excited for Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine album coming out next week and that’ll make the next list I put out.
All I Really Want is You – The Marías
The Marías, led by María Zardoya and Josh Conway, are known for their dreamy mix of indie, jazz, and pop music. I don’t think about anyone in particular when I listen to this song, I just relate to the desire to run away and escape the world with someone.
Perfect Places – Lorde
Lorde devoured with her sophomore album Melodrama. It’s definitely one of the top albums that I can say defines my life. Perfect Places reminds me of traveling to the Dominican Republic, getting drunk with my classmates, dancing, and just having the time of our lives together. I will always associate the song with that life-changing trip.
Stargazing – The Neighbourhood
This was my airplane take-off song while traveling earlier this year because it just made me feel good. I also relate the song to stargazing in the countryside of the Dominican Republic. It’s incredible how many stars and planets are visible in areas with little light pollution.
Making Out – No Doubt
I love Gwen Stefani in No Doubt so much. I relate to this song when I think about the possibility of meeting up with an old flame. Plus, it just gives me confidence when walking to class.
Lovesong – The Cure
I’ve been listening to a lot of The Cure recently and I absolutely adore them. I love the guitar solo part of this song too. I’m not in love, but this song does help me romanticize life for better or for worse.
Forget Her – Jeff Buckley
Jeff Buckley was a star taken from us too soon. He was a fascinating person, I recommend looking up some of his old writing and poems. They’re very interesting. I’ve been imagining this song from the perspective of a man learning he’s been cheated on and the intense emotions that follow. The line “she was heartbreak from the moment that you met her” makes me reflect on myself and question how people can be manipulative at times.
love is embarrassing – Olivia Rodrigo
This song is comforting in the sense that I’m not the only one who regrets and cringes on the past decisions I made regarding my love life. I too wish I didn’t spend so much energy on a weird second-string loser.
Those were my top seven songs of 2024 so far! I’ll be back next month with some more 😀
